I give thanks to God for the gifts of Parish Ministry Associates serving in numerous congregations and ministries all across the Central States Synod. These laywomen and laymen, equipped for service, bring vital pastoral ministry to congregations and communities. With these gifts we are strengthened in our mission: Walking Together to Make Christ Known.
Through the Parish Ministry Associate Program, the Central States Synod is providing a means for the growth and extension of the Church’s mission in the world. Major demographic shifts, as well as the challenges of a changing world, demand new models for ministries. We are blessed with many individuals with gifts and passions that can serve the Church well in making these new models alive and viable. Through PMA’s, the Gospel of Jesus Christ continues to be proclaimed and the Sacraments administered through traditional as well as new ministry models.
You will note that we encourage interested persons to discern their calling as a two-part process—to first enroll and begin taking courses. Then, after completing part of your theological education, you may apply for formal entry into the PMA program.
I offer a two-fold invitation. First, the education available is excellent preparation for discipleship whether or not you have interest in service as a PMA. Consider enrolling in these courses whether or not your interest extends further. Second, I do invite you to consider your calling, and to discern through prayers and conversation if God is calling you to the PMA form of ministry. I invite you to consider the Parish Ministry Associate Program as a means to strengthen your gifts for ministry. Not only will you be blessed; you shall be a blessing to others!
